Big Brothers Big Sisters refers to the mentoring programs of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBS). BBBS mentors are referred to as Big Brothers and Big Sisters (“Bigs” for short), and mentees are referred to as Little Brothers and Little Sisters (“Littles”). Other mentoring programs may utilize similar terminology (e.g., “big brother”), but they should not be assumed to be affiliated with BBBS. The use of volunteers as mentors is common to all BBBS programs.

With a few exceptions, each Big is matched with one Little; thus, BBBS is representative of a one-to-one approach to mentoring rather than that of a group model (i.e., each mentor working with multiple youth). Matches of Bigs and Littles are formed by program staff based on considerations such ...
