Apps and the App Gap

Since the commercialization of multitouch technologies in 2007, there has been a dramatic increase in the availability of apps. The term app is derived from application, which has its roots in the initial productivity-related uses of desktop computers. Although originally developed for adult productivity and information retrieval (e-mail, agenda, contacts), it did not take long before developers designed apps for other purposes, such as entertainment and education, and for different audiences. Over the years, the rapid changes in technological possibilities as well as the introduction of other mobile devices have led to an increase in the popularity and variety of apps.
