Instagram is a social media platform and sharing tool that allows users to upload pictures and short video clips through their individual accounts. The platform was founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Instagram users can tag photos, add text descriptions to photos, and organize photos via hashtag and geotagging. Instagram is also linked to its social media counterparts including Twitter and Facebook, allowing photos and video from the platform to be shared across differing applications with one upload. In 2012, Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion.
