Hispanic film encompasses cinema from the many Spanish-speaking countries of the world. These films together represent a transnational assemblage. While they originate from varied geographic and cultural regions, their language connects them. The Spanish language, a Romance language that originated in Spain, spread to Latin America during its colonization beginning in the 15th century. Spanish is now spoken over many continents and considered the primary language of 20 different countries. After Mandarin and English, Spanish is the most spoken language by total number of speakers.
