Media in Haiti have been a vehicle for political, cultural, and social change during significant times in Haiti’s history. It has been an enduring mainstay of Haitian life, reflecting the dualities, structures, setbacks, and potential of the country. Haiti is the first Black republic in the world and is the second largest nation in the Caribbean, after Cuba, with a population of 10.98 million in 2017. Haiti covers 10,714 square miles of the western portion of the island of Hispaniola, with its neighbor the Dominican Republic on the eastern side. Along with Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, the island is part of the four largest islands of the Greater Antilles, whose combined size is roughly 90% of the landmass of all Caribbean islands.
