With more than two thirds of its population active Internet and smartphone users in 2018, according to Eurostat, and positive annual growth in its communications industries, the Greek media sphere seemed to be recovering from the financial crisis and ensuing austerity that hit the country from 2010 to 2015. According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, in 2017, the Greek information and communication industry sector recorded growth for the first time in several years, with an annual turnover of €8.2 million (5.7% higher than the year before). This growth came after several years of negative turnover index values; at the same time, societal trust in the media has been in steady decline since the 1980s, according to Eurobarometer data.
