A former state of the former Soviet Union located in the South Caucasus, Georgia attained independence in 1991. Georgia is a country with diverse ethnic groups. As a result, two autonomous republics, Abkhazia and Acaristan, and an autonomous region, South Ossetia, are located in the territory of the country.
