Feminist media studies are a rich and vibrant body of academic investigation and have developed greatly since the early 1970s when they first emerged as an academic discipline. There are many feminisms, ranging from radical to liberal and Black to postmodern, to name but a few. For this reason, it is useful to think of the plural feminisms rather than simply feminism when considering the scope of media analyses under this umbrella.
