Cyprus

In the divided island of Cyprus, where communication between Turkish Cypriots (TC) and Greek Cypriots (GC) is limited, the news media are key actors in the conflict. Journalism plays an important role in shaping public and political discourses and influencing public understanding of, and responses to, what has become known as the Cyprus Problem. However, journalism practices, characterized by lack of diversity, dependence on official sources, and dominance of nationalist discourses, contribute to the continuation of the conflict rather than a settlement.

This entry focuses on the relationship between journalism and the conflict in Cyprus. First, it provides some background information on the conflict in Cyprus and then examines the news media in Cyprus. Finally, it explores how the conflict has shaped journalism on the island.
