The rise of smartphones has increased the penetration of digital media into the everyday lives of consumers and audiences. Worldwide there were over 5 billion unique mobile phone subscribers in 2017. Within smartphones, software applications, known as apps, create tactile interfaces for ease of usage. In the United States, mobile device users spent an average of 5 hours per day on their smartphones in 2017, and a large portion of that time spent on a smartphone was dedicated to the usage of apps. Apps allow users to embody technology and code with a finger, and the tactile interface invites a seemingly seamless user experience.
