Background

This Pacific Island nation, which is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, is an archipelago made up of 83 islands, 65 of which are inhabited. The most significant islands of Vanuatu are Espíritu Santo (the largest), Malakula, Malo, Pentecost, Tanna, and Efate, where the capital Port Vila is located. In 2006, Vanuatu topped the Happy Planet Index based on consumption levels, life expectancy, and reported happiness.
