Spain is a constitutional monarchy located mainly in Southern Europe with about 47 million inhabitants. The country includes autonomous communities located in an archipelagos in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, and in northern Africa, bordering Morocco. After the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975, Juan Carlos became King of Spain, which marked the beginning of the country’s democratisation and the liberalisation of the political system after 36 years of dictatorship. Spain was then divided into 17 autonomous communities. In 1986, Spain entered the European Union.
