Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands is an archipelagic state situated in the southwest Pacific Ocean with a land mass of 28,400 square kilometers that extends over nearly 1,000 islands comprising nine main island groups. This entry provides a brief overview of Solomon Island’s media and communications landscape.

Background

The population of Solomon Islands, estimated in July 2018 to be 660,121, is predominantly Melanesian although there are also small Polynesian, Micronesian, Chinese, and European communities. There are more than 80 Indigenous languages, with numerous local dialects, spoken in the country. While English is the official language, Solomon’s Pijin is the lingua franca for the majority of people. Solomon Islands is one of the Pacific’s poorest countries, with high costs of service delivery due to a small and geographically dispersed population.
