Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) is a national public service media organisation in Ireland. Established in 1960 and with its headquarters in Dublin, it is the country’s largest and oldest broadcaster, employing just over 1,900 people at the end of 2017. For nearly three decades following its establishment, RTÉ enjoyed a formal monopoly in Irish television and radio broadcasting. Since private broadcasting was legalised in 1988, RTÉ has become one player—albeit a major one—in a mixed economy of domestic and international broadcast media. This entry introduces RTÉ’s place in the Irish media landscape, first outlining the broadcaster’s range of services before exploring its establishment and emergence from directly state-controlled radio, the particularities of its funding model, and the evolution of its regulatory framework.
