Portugal has been a democratic country since 1974 and a member of the European Union since 1986. Its media landscape is the result of the country’s political and economic evolution and is dominated by companies that were established or restructured during the early 1990s or in the years that followed the economic crisis of 2008. Television remains the prevalent medium in Portugal, and it is the main news source for the majority of the population, even though its consumption is higher among older demographics. Besides six free-to-air national TV channels plus one dedicated to parliamentary broadcasts, subscription television is also widespread. According to Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (the national communications authority), subscription television reached 92.9% of the population in 2017.
