Podcasting is the syndicated publishing or distribution of audio through the Internet. As of June 2018, Apple Podcasts hosted more than 550,000 active shows, including 18.5 million individual episodes, representing 155 countries and in more than 100 languages. Digital audio files in an MP3 format are received by subscribing to a podcast feed also called an RSS or XML feed. Individuals may use podcatchers, a computer program used to download various types of media, to subscribe. Once a user is subscribed, podcast files will be delivered and synced with a device. Examples of podcatchers include Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, and Overcast. Podcasts can also be downloaded individually, and it is not required that a user subscribes.
