At 130,373 square kilometers (50,337 square miles), Nicaragua is the largest of the seven Central American countries by area. Nicaragua lies due north of the popular tourist destination of Costa Rica and boasts more than 500 miles of Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean shoreline, as well as the biggest freshwater lake in all of Central America—Lago de Nicaragua. There are approximately 6 million people in Nicaragua, located mostly in the large urban centers and along the coast in locales such as San Juan del Sur.
