Mauritius is a small island country located in the Indian Ocean. It is to the east of Africa and about 500 miles east of Madagascar. Arab explorers discovered the island in the 9th century. However, just like the Portuguese who later encountered the island, the Arabs did not settle on the island because of its dense vegetation. Over the next few centuries, the Dutch and then the French rulers, who called the island Ile de France, colonized the region. During the battle over the Grand Port harbor in 1810, the French lost to the British, who then ruled the island for 158 years until its independence on March 12, 1968.
