In the field of marital, couple, and family therapy, ideas have been borrowed from other disciplines to help explain the structure and functioning of living systems such as couples and families. Cybernetics is a transdisciplinary approach used to explore and explain communication and control in nonliving and living systems. Norbert Wiener, the originator of cybernetics, examined different feedback mechanisms that would control a system by providing information about whether that system needed to de-amplify change (homeostasis) or amplify change.
