Military Couples and Families

Counseling military couples, families, and their children is a subspecialty of the broader field of couple and family counseling. Military families interact in accordance with systemic principles just as civilian families do. The rules, traditions, context, and culture of the military create unique challenges for both the families and the counselor. Counselors who specialize in helping military families may provide services to a wide range of military clients. This includes U.S. service members who are currently on active duty as well as veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and veterans of the ongoing War on Terrorism. (For the purposes of this encyclopedia entry, the terms service member and warrior are used interchangeably.)
