Marital group therapy refers to the process of counseling in which one or more practitioners meet with multiple individuals to address a common goal. Group facilitators often focus groups on a specific topic prevalent to the participating members and address topics such as career, relationships, and intrapersonal concerns. A variety of modalities for group work have been identified. Psychoeducational groups focus on educating group members about a particular topic (e.g., parenting groups). Task groups allow members to work together to accomplish a shared goal (e.g., school staff working toward improved service implementation). Self-help groups allow individuals to support one another through a shared identified issue (e.g., substance use).
