Marital distress is a common occurrence characterized by emotional distress, conflict, and other difficulties within a union. The occurrence of marital distress is somewhat different from the typical highs and lows within a relationship. Although in marriages periods of distress are typical, particularly in those that are long term, distress occurs less often than the more regular disputes generally seen in relationships. Individuals who feel distressed within their marriage are unsatisfied or discontent with their marriage overall. Distress can be experienced by one or both individuals in the relationship. If one individual is experiencing feelings of distress, then marital distress has occurred. It is not essential for both people within the relationship to experience distress for marital distress to occur.
