Loss is the experience of no longer having a person, thing, or experience that a person valued. This in turn leads to the experience of grieving. Loss is a normal human emotional experience that is often complex and layered. The experience of a loss can be felt on a spectrum from very mild to very extreme. These emotions and experiences of a loss may change over time and eventually dissipate, though some feel the effects of a very difficult and painful loss for the rest of their life. In the clinical professions, the term loss is often used synonymously with the terms grief and bereavement.
