Group parenting classes are a type of parent education that provides parents with instrumental parenting information. The group format allows parents to learn and discuss the material with other parents in a single or specified number of group sessions. The duration of each session, number of sessions, location, and fee for service (if any) of a group parenting class program is usually dictated by the goals of the agency offering this service. Group parenting class programs are offered by various organizations such as school districts; federal, state, or local government agencies; and nonprofit groups. This entry discusses the reasons parents attend group parenting classes, the theoretical basis of these classes, and some of the types of group parenting classes offered.
