Quality time (QT) is a technical phrase referring to the use of time that couples and families choose to spend together so that they can focus on conversations and activities that strengthen their relationships. During this time the individuals choose a mutually agreed-upon activity. It should be one that satisfies their internal motivators as described in choice theory (the theory informing reality therapy, a therapeutic model used with individuals, couples, and families): belonging, inner control, freedom, and fun. When couples report that they are not getting along (i.e., cannot communicate empathically; argue, blame, and criticize each other as well as fail to solve their problems) they invariably have failed to spend pleasant moments together.
