Child Behavior Problems

Children’s behavior generally falls within a range that is considered “normal” for their age, developmental level, personality type, and sociocultural background. A necessary developmental task for children is to learn how to manage and regulate feelings and behaviors, but this practice does not always come easily or automatically. Children who lack the skills, modeling, and support to develop healthy coping skills may develop behavior problems. Child behavior problems can be defined as a pattern of emotional or behavioral dysregulation that is disproportionate to a triggering event (or lacking a triggering event); inappropriate for the child’s developmental age; prolonged (e.g., temper tantrums longer than 10 minutes in duration); severe (e.g., violent, threatening to self or others, or destructive to property); disruptive to the child’s individual, familial, ...
