Individuals and couples sometimes experience sexual difficulties. When a therapist works with clients about sexual issues, it is important to do a sexual assessment and gather information on their sexual history. Sexual assessments are done in order to diagnose a sexual problem and/or create a treatment plan to intervene with sexual issues. Although there are specific models of sexual assessment, in general clinicians collect information about the sexual history, sexual functioning, values, and expectations of clients. The information can be collected through interviews, questionnaires, or tests. In addition, sexual assessment and history taking can be done from an individual perspective or a relational perspective.
