Emotions are unique qualities that develop over time, distinguish each individual child from others, and significantly influence personality over the lifespan. Anger is one of five basic emotions—fear, disgust, sadness, and happiness—and is also the building block of several other emotional states—annoyance, indignation, hatred, wrath, jealousy, and envy. Anger is one of the most talked about yet least understood emotions, accounting for most referrals to mental health services.

The costs borne by educational, health, criminal justice, and mental health systems that deal with individuals with anger and conduct problems are staggering, making such behavior the most costly mental health problem in North America. Anger has been studied across the lifespan, and significant age differences in the experience and expression of anger have been identified.
