Homelessness

Homelessness is a broad term that encompasses a variety of situations in which an individual may have unstable housing; this may range from brief periods or nights in which an individual does not have a secure place in which to sleep to months or years without a stable residence. The prevalence rates of homelessness among LGBTQ youth are of particular concern. Based on data from several studies examining this issue among LGBTQ youth, it is clear that these youth disproportionately experience homelessness and its associated mental and physical health risks, in comparison to heterosexually identified cisgender (i.e., when one’s gender identity coincides with assigned sex) youth.
