Ally Experience

Allies of the LGBTQ movement are heterosexually identified people who support the rights of LGBTQ people and who are active in that support. Increasingly, LGB people who identify as cisgender and who actively support transgender (trans) people and their rights are also referred to as allies—in this case, allies to the trans community. Allies to the LGBTQ community have a very broad range of experiences. The specific geographical and political context within which allies engage exerts a large influence on the tasks they are called upon to undertake in counteracting anti-LGBTQ stigma, the skills they draw on, the social resources they have at their disposal, and the nature of the demands and difficulties they encounter as they carry out their work.
