Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) older adults are emerging from the margins, creating an increasingly diverse older adult population. Approximately 2.4% of American adults ages 50 and older self-identity as LGBTQ, representing more than 2.4 million people; this number more than doubles when taking into account same-sex sexual behavior and romantic relationships. In addition, the number of LGBTQ older adults is increasing dramatically, due to the aging of the baby boom generation, and is expected to double over the next 15 years.
