Workplace Relationships

Workplace relationships refer to the interpersonal relationships between LGBTQ employees and other LGBTQ or non-LGBTQ employees. Workplace relationships are affected by the extent to which organizations protect LGBTQ-identified people, as well as the extent to which individual employees work toward creating inclusive environments for their coworkers. Organizations that promote inclusive workplace relationships between LGBTQ workers and other LGBTQ or non-LGBTQ workers tend to be environments that are more productive and have higher well-being. Conversely, organizations that do not foster meaningful and supportive workplace relationships or that tolerate discrimination have workers that have difficulty coping with the stress of the job. This entry discusses how LGBTQ nondiscrimination laws can affect workplace relationships and how positive workplace relationships can contribute to the well-being of workers.
