LGBTQ artists have made important, if at times underexamined, contributions to the visual arts, bringing issues of representation in relation to LGBTQ gender and sexuality into view. In addition to the artistic contributions made by LGBTQ artists, it is important to consider, as well, the emergence of LGBTQ art history as a field of study that has developed steadily since the 1990s, a time of increased visibility for LGBTQ artists.
