Transgender Geographies

Transgender, or trans, geographies explore the ways in which trans-identified people experience and create places and spaces. This area of study has challenged both gender geographies, which have tended to examine the geographies of men and women, and sexualities/queer geographies, which have been focused on gay men and lesbians by showing the limits of binary thinking (e.g., the limits of seeing people only as men and women and seeing those categories as fixed and unchanging). The emergent trans geographies that have been created have emphasized urban places, with a distinct focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) spaces within cities.
