Seen as a response to the then all-news cable channel, CNN, MSNBC went live in July of 1996 after 2 years of planning. The channel was joint venture between Microsoft and NBC that lasted for more than a decade. MSNBC is now part of NBCUniversal. From its beginnings, MSNBC has been willing to change its looks and content, leading to the perception that the channel was more opinion-journalism, rather than factual-journalism.
