Consideration toward the visual presentation of news on the printed page began largely in the middle of the 20th century and amplified through the end of the century with the additions of color printing and enhanced emphasis on design pioneered by Gannett through USA Today and its other newspapers. In the early 21st century, design has been considered as a component of branding for a newspaper’s content and as a value-added component of consuming the print edition. The layout of news pages is a distinct operation from the layout of advertisements, and it follows the long-standing separation of editorial and advertising operations; it is often called news design or editorial design.
