Sinclair Broadcast Group founder Julian Sinclair Smith began with one FM radio station in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1971, and since then, his family has built one of the largest media corporations in the United States. Julian was an engineer who decided to go into business for himself and created the Chesapeake Television Corporation. The Sinclair Broadcast Group was founded in 1986 and went public in 1995. The group is traded on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker symbol SBGI (Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc.). The company owns, operates, and/or provides services to 191 television stations in 89 designated market areas.
