Photography

Photography is a media technology and form of communication. Since its inception nearly 200 years ago in 1826, photography has played a key role in shaping our awareness of history, creating national, social, and individual identities and effecting commonly held societal norms, ideological beliefs, commercial interests, and cultural values that are central to our way of life. This entry provides a general overview of photography in relationship to culture and society. In addition to examining the histories of analog and digital photography, this entry examines the picture press, documentary work, camera work, fine art photography, and street photography.
