Fluid Intelligence

Fluid intelligence is defined as the ability to think logically, reason abstractly, form concepts, and solve problems in new situations. It requires the ability to interpret complex spatial, numerical, or conceptual relations. Therefore, fluid intelligence has also been described as the innate learning capacity of all individuals or the mind’s information processing system. Deficits in fluid intelligence are common in several intellectual and developmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, math disorders). This entry further defines fluid intelligence, contrasts fluid intelligence from crystalized intelligence, discusses the overlap of fluid intelligence and executive functions, and reviews the development and measurement of this construct. This entry also briefly discusses intellectual and developmental disorders characterized by deficits in fluid intelligence and presents treatment recommendations.
