Family Impact in Adulthood

Family impact in adulthood in the context of intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) can be approached from two perspectives: (1) the impact of the family on the adult with ID/DD, and (2) the impact of the adult with ID/DD on the family. These perspectives are two sides of the same coin. Individuals with ID/DD frequently rely on their families for support in adulthood across several domains, making families extremely influential in, for example, what amount of postsecondary education adults with ID/DD achieve. Families typically are the closest and most consistent support in the lives of family members with ID/DD and strongly influence the development of these individuals who require support with regard to decision making and achieving their goals for adulthood.
