Transitional Age Youth

Transitional age youth, generally defined as people 16 through 24 years old, often encounter major changes regarding employment, postsecondary education, and other pivotal life decisions that lead to greater autonomy. The transition from adolescence to adulthood can be an especially challenging time for youth with disabilities and their families as it involves taking on new roles or adapting to existing roles. In particular, youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) have significant and pervasive support needs that can generate uncertainty about the future. Substantial difficulties for this population can be attributed to personal limitations (e.g., behavioral and emotional problems) and environmental restrictions (e.g., uncoordinated services and limited resources).
