Supported Living
Supported living refers to a variety of services that enable individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities (ID/DD) to live independently in their communities. It is not a residential program or type of residence. Rather, supported living is a philosophy and approach to delivering services across a wide range of residential settings. It provides an alternative to public institutions by moving customized services to where the individual lives. This entry describes the basis for supported living, its fundamental principles, and the types of supported living arrangements available to individuals with ID/DD.
