Positive Parenting of Children With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Broadly, positive evidence-based practices focus on the development of skills, future goal attainment, and meeting the needs of the individual to prevent problem behavior. For parents, these strategies can be applied to their children to prevent problematic behavior by meeting the needs of their children and by teaching skills that promote desired behavior in the future. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may engage in problem behaviors that make it difficult for parents to remain positive and use positive evidence-based parenting strategies. Considering those difficulties, this entry discusses strategies in positive parenting that can be used to promote successful parenting practices and positive outcomes for children, and ends with a brief discussion of parent training programs.
