Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring is an evidenced-based intervention that has been primarily implemented in elementary and secondary schools to promote academic skill acquisition in students. Unlike traditional teaching, which employs an adult to provide academic instruction to a learner, a peer-tutoring paradigm trains one or more children to provide instruction to their peers. Peer tutoring differs from other types of peer-mediated interventions in that the primary focus is to improve academic performance, usually in math or reading, and the peer tutor is providing direct intervention services through the delivery of instructions, consequences, and performance feedback. Comprehensive reviews of the literature suggest that peer tutoring is generally effective across a variety of academic domains for typically developing children and children with disabilities, including mild intellectual disability.
