Owens, William A.: First Recipient, SIOP Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award

William A. Owens, PhD, was the first recipient of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award in 1983. He served as president of SIOP in 1969–1970. Owens held academic positions at Iowa State University, Purdue University, and the University of Georgia between 1940 and 1984, having also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In his academic positions, Owens supervised more than 100 theses and dissertations. He served as head of the psychology department at Iowa State University, university professor and director of the Institute for Behavioral Research at the University of Georgia, and interim provost at the University of Georgia. SIOP’s Scholarly Contribution Award, for the best article in a given year, is named in his honor.
