Online assessment refers to the administration of tests or evaluative measures of knowledge, skills, abilities, or other characteristics of job applicants and employees through the use of technology and the Internet. In the early 2000s, organizations began to favor the administration of tests over the Internet rather than in person; most of these early online assessments mimicked the format of traditional paper-and-pencil tests in a computer format. As technology advanced, however, more sophisticated features such as adaptive logic, high-fidelity virtual environments and simulations, and gaming components became available and have since been incorporated in assessments.
