The Mechanical Turk (M-Turk) is an Amazon service that connects (for a percentage-based fee) paying work requesters with paid online workers around the world. The types of tasks (known as human intelligence tasks or HITs) typically transacted through this service involve such activities as transcribing, image tagging, and examination of Internet resources for adult-only content. However, as social scientists have demonstrated, the type of work that can be conducted through the M-Turk is not limited to these or even a much larger list of approved purposes.
