Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues at Work

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are physically and/or emotionally attracted to individuals of their own gender. Bisexual individuals are those who are attracted to individuals of both genders. Although these are the definitions we use in this article, it is important to note that other definitions differ in the extent to which they focus on feelings, behaviors, lifestyles, and self-identifications. Surveys asking respondents whether they “self-identify as LGB” reveal a consistent range of 2% to 7% who appear to identify as LGB across many countries (e.g., United Kingdom, Australia, France, Norway, Italy), in the United States, and within the U.S. workforce.
