Error management training is a training method that explicitly encourages participants to make errors during training and to conceive of errors during training as opportunities to learn. It is a form of active training in which participants actively explore the training tasks and receive relatively little external guidance from trainers or detailed training material. The effectiveness of error management training has most often been demonstrated for technical skills (in particular, computer skills), although its scope of application is much broader. For example, error management training has also been applied to driving (i.e., driving simulator training), decision making, and the complex interpersonal skill of negotiation.
