Data mining refers to a family of analytic techniques concerned with finding meaningful patterns in large data sets. An illustrative example and one of the best-known data mining techniques is association rules mining, sometimes referred to as shopping cart analysis. Association rules mining is often used in recommender systems that users experience on Web sites: “Because you bought A, you might also be interested in B.” Statisticians and computer scientists have collaborated to develop algorithms like association rules mining that seek patterns in both numerical and non-numerical data such as text, audio, and video.
